On July 12, we launched our Summer Co-ed Volleyball League. We have 65 people participating in the league this summer. Additionally, on July 13th - 17th, we held our 2nd annual NPCC Youth Soccer Camp. We endured the heat and had a lot of fun. There were about 40 kids who participated in this summer's camp. Here is the highlight video that we showed at the &amp;quot;Medal Ceremony&amp;quot;:&lt;/p&gt; &lt;div class="wlWriterEditableSmartContent" id="scid:5737277B-5D6D-4f48-ABFC-DD9C333F4C5D:2de0c5e6-7eb5-4987-904b-40f08c3a66f0" style="padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; float: none; padding-bottom: 0px; margin: 0px; padding-top: 0px"&gt;&lt;div id="91c373b5-c3dc-456f-9f61-50edce9c8651" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; display: inline;"&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAu4FG8GbMs&amp;amp;feature=youtube_gdata" target="_new"&gt;&lt;img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_2O6aKAN8Alo/TESseCNhPII/AAAAAAAAACI/NbYxNhjw54s/video1d15d71db8e0%5B2%5D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="border-style: none" galleryimg="no" onload="var downlevelDiv = document.getElementById('91c373b5-c3dc-456f-9f61-50edce9c8651'); downlevelDiv.innerHTML = &amp;quot;&amp;lt;div&amp;gt;&amp;lt;object width=\&amp;quot;407\&amp;quot; height=\&amp;quot;305\&amp;quot;&amp;gt;&amp;lt;param name=\&amp;quot;movie\&amp;quot; value=\&amp;quot;http://www.youtube.com/v/FAu4FG8GbMs&amp;amp;hl=en\&amp;quot;&amp;gt;&amp;lt;\/param&amp;gt;&amp;lt;embed src=\&amp;quot;http://www.youtube.com/v/FAu4FG8GbMs&amp;amp;hl=en\&amp;quot; type=\&amp;quot;application/x-shockwave-flash\&amp;quot; width=\&amp;quot;407\&amp;quot; height=\&amp;quot;305\&amp;quot;&amp;gt;&amp;lt;\/embed&amp;gt;&amp;lt;\/object&amp;gt;&amp;lt;\/div&amp;gt;&amp;quot;;" alt=""&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/div&gt; &lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6559022735490689198-9113864336498457995?l=benjamincarver.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/feeds/9113864336498457995/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=6559022735490689198&amp;postID=9113864336498457995' title='0 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/9113864336498457995'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/9113864336498457995'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/2010/07/soccer-camp.html' title='Soccer Camp'/><author><name>Ben Carver</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/16282666990767861778</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='22' height='32' src='http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_2O6aKAN8Alo/SOOgvwfdigI/AAAAAAAAAAM/R5PAlFpJ_8Q/S220/bball.jpg'/></author><media:thumbnail xmlns:media='http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/' url='http://lh6.ggpht.com/_2O6aKAN8Alo/TESseCNhPII/AAAAAAAAACI/NbYxNhjw54s/s72-c/video1d15d71db8e0%5B2%5D.jpg?imgmax=800' height='72' width='72'/><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6559022735490689198.post-6422780050534694720</id><published>2010-03-10T14:08:00.001-08:00</published><updated>2010-03-10T14:08:54.698-08:00</updated><title type='text'>Armor Highlight Video</title><content type='html'>&lt;p&gt;It is finally here. It's called "All Pro Dad" and I am super-excited about the possibilities. We've meant twice already with nearly 160 people attending between two meetings. If you're asking, what is All Pro Dad all about, let me explain.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;All Pro Dad is a once per month meeting where dads can bring their children (ages 5-14) for breakfast and some one-on-one time with their kids. We eliminate the everyday confusion, chaos, and run-arounds and try to give you a little over an hour to focus in on your kids and becoming a better dad. The meeting always starts with an awesome breakfast prepared by Jean Vacha. Then, we move into videos, one-on-one discussions, teaching, resources, raffles, and a whole bunch of other stuff. By attending a meeting, you are then eligible to receive periodic emails from All Pro Dad throughout the month. It is pretty cool stuff, and I feel it can create some positive effects in your home.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In February, I had the privilege of speaking. Even though I am not a father, there are definite things that I am learning- not just for the future but also for the present. If there is one thing I can pass on that God has really been showing me, it is this: Life can be unexpected and uncontrollable, but your relationships are one thing you have control over. If you have to choose, don't waste your time on other things, but choose your relationships (wife, children, friends, etc.). I can speak from experience in saying that the memories you begin building today with your wife or your children are the only things that will last for a very long time. Make the most of today in your relationships!!!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you are interested in All Pro Dad, you can visit &lt;a href="http://www.newpointe.org/"&gt;www.newpointe.org&lt;/a&gt; and All Pro Dad has its own page under "Sports Ministry". You can register right there on the website. Our next meeting is Saturday, March 27 @ 8:45 a.m. in Studio 56. This is an awesome opportunity to start creating some new memories with your kid(s).&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6559022735490689198-2867567150636821343?l=benjamincarver.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/feeds/2867567150636821343/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=6559022735490689198&amp;postID=2867567150636821343' title='0 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/2867567150636821343'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/2867567150636821343'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/2010/03/all-pro-dad.html' title='All Pro Dad'/><author><name>Ben Carver</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/16282666990767861778</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='22' height='32' src='http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_2O6aKAN8Alo/SOOgvwfdigI/AAAAAAAAAAM/R5PAlFpJ_8Q/S220/bball.jpg'/></author><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6559022735490689198.post-1277386649383438253</id><published>2010-02-23T07:46:00.000-08:00</published><updated>2010-02-23T07:51:20.381-08:00</updated><title type='text'>The ME I Want to Be</title><content type='html'>If you didn't already know, we have a new series that just started at NewPointe. It is called "The Me I Want to Be". This series is all about becoming the person you were designed to be and turning your life around to reach your potential.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It seems like so many of the series at NewPointe lately have been exciting, but this series is really gonna "bring it". Come on out on Sunday mornings at 9:00 or 11:00 to check it out. Additionally, there is a website (thechangeinside.com) that will be updated daily for the next 40 days. It goes right along with this series and should be another good resource.&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6559022735490689198-1277386649383438253?l=benjamincarver.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/feeds/1277386649383438253/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=6559022735490689198&amp;postID=1277386649383438253' title='0 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/1277386649383438253'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/1277386649383438253'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/2010/02/me-i-want-to-be.html' title='The ME I Want to Be'/><author><name>Ben Carver</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/16282666990767861778</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='22' height='32' src='http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_2O6aKAN8Alo/SOOgvwfdigI/AAAAAAAAAAM/R5PAlFpJ_8Q/S220/bball.jpg'/></author><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6559022735490689198.post-9044998814091604114</id><published>2010-01-11T11:56:00.001-08:00</published><updated>2010-01-11T12:19:29.056-08:00</updated><title type='text'>NPCC Sports Ministry</title><content type='html'>There has been a lot going on in NPCC Sports Ministry. It seems like most of the last 3 months have been devoted to Armor Basketball. On December 19, Armor Basketball concluded with a special KidStuf - Armor Basketball Edition. With nearly 140 kids that participated, Armor Basketball was successful in all 3 of our core areas:&lt;br /&gt; 1. Helping each child become a better basketball player&lt;br /&gt; 2. Teaching each child the fundamentals of life and a relationship with Christ in order to allow&lt;br /&gt; them to grow into quality young men and women.&lt;br /&gt; 3. Providing a basketball league that is fun and exciting - something they've never experienced&lt;br /&gt; before.&lt;br /&gt;Each week, there was a new excitement and a new challenge for every team. Competition is the breeding ground for teachable moments. In basketball, winning and losing bring out emotions, actions, and reactions like no other activity can. Thus, we were able to leverage competition to not only teach kids about sport, but to also teach them about winning and losing at home, school, and with God. It was an amazing eight weeks!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As one season ends, there always seems to be a new one on the horizon. On January 18, our winter Co-Ed Volleyball League will begin. This season, we have nearly 60 men and women registered to participate in our volleyball league. We are slowly seeing growth and becoming better at providing a quality league that is unique to this area.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;On top of our volleyball league, our men's basketball league will be starting in 1 month. Registration is currently open for the Men's Basketball League and will run through February 2. Early-bird pricing of $35 lasts through January 24. This season, we will be providing certified OHSAA officials for each game and each player will receive a reversible jersey. Additionally, awards will be given to the champions. If you are interested in participating, more information and registration details are provided at newpointe.org under the "Sports Ministry" link.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Finally, we have a new program that will be starting in January. All Pro Dad is a program for fathers and their children where they can come enjoy breakfast together, meet other fathers and their children, talk about a wide range of topics, and receive resources to help build their relationship with their kids. On the fourth Saturday or every month, All Pro Dad will take place in Studio 56 (8:45 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.). We understand that parenting isn't always easy, but we want to assist you in the process and provide ways to bring your family closer together. Again, information is available at our website.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At NPCC, our mission is to lead people into a growing relationship with Christ. Through sports, we want to offer people a non-threatening environment where they can check out NPCC and build relationships in a new way. If you attend NPCC, this is a great chance to begin the "Invest and Invite" process. If you don't attend NPCC, our leagues are a great opportunity to play competitive/recreational sports in a beautiful facility. We always strive to give you the highest quality league!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;NPCC is opening doors to a lot of people through sports. It is exciting to see what God has in store for us!&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6559022735490689198-9044998814091604114?l=benjamincarver.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/feeds/9044998814091604114/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=6559022735490689198&amp;postID=9044998814091604114' title='0 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/9044998814091604114'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/9044998814091604114'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/2010/01/npcc-sports-ministry.html' title='NPCC Sports Ministry'/><author><name>Ben Carver</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/16282666990767861778</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='22' height='32' src='http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_2O6aKAN8Alo/SOOgvwfdigI/AAAAAAAAAAM/R5PAlFpJ_8Q/S220/bball.jpg'/></author><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6559022735490689198.post-4876846251730524584</id><published>2010-01-05T19:17:00.000-08:00</published><updated>2010-01-05T19:30:31.418-08:00</updated><title type='text'>Fiesta Bowl - Not The Party We Wanted</title><content type='html'>Although the Fiesta Bowl matched up two unbeaten teams, it wasn't exactly what we hope for in the BCS bowl games. We love the underdog story. Having TCU and Boise State in BCS bowls games was far from the problem. Having them face each other, huge mistake.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Everyone remembers that unbelievable finish to the 2007 Fiesta Bowl. That game matched up the unbeaten Boise State against an Oklahoma team that many felt could be in the BCS Title game. Boise State hung tough all game and eventually upset the Sooners on the "Statue of Liberty". Isn't that what we wait all season to see? Sure, we love the underdogs, but we don't want to see them play each other. We have seen them play teams from their smaller conferences all season. What every college football fan wants to know is whether a team who can dominate the WAC belongs in a BCS title, or simply a BCS game period. In order to find that out, they must be matched up the bigger conference teams.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If TCU wants to prove they truly are the 3rd best team in the nation, they should have relished at the chance to be matched up against Florida. Boise St. should have been wanting the opportunity to prove that they could compete against the best of the Pac-10 or Big Ten. If Boise State or TCU could be competitive with teams like Florida, Ohio State, or Oregon and those games go down to the wire, that is what proves to us that these teams belong in consideration for BCS games.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The BCS committee should never allow "mid-major" teams to face each other in BCS bowl games. Give us an underdog story! Give these teams the opportunity to prove themselves agains the major conference champions. Give us something to remember, like the 2007 Fiesta Bowl.&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6559022735490689198-4876846251730524584?l=benjamincarver.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/feeds/4876846251730524584/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=6559022735490689198&amp;postID=4876846251730524584' title='0 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/4876846251730524584'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/4876846251730524584'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/2010/01/fiesta-bowl-not-party-we-wanted.html' title='Fiesta Bowl - Not The Party We Wanted'/><author><name>Ben Carver</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/16282666990767861778</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='22' height='32' src='http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_2O6aKAN8Alo/SOOgvwfdigI/AAAAAAAAAAM/R5PAlFpJ_8Q/S220/bball.jpg'/></author><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6559022735490689198.post-8402566326878237355</id><published>2009-12-08T11:38:00.000-08:00</published><updated>2009-12-08T11:59:43.978-08:00</updated><title type='text'>Ohio Sports Update</title><content type='html'>If you are a huge sports fan and live in Ohio, chances are you are only truly interested in the Cavs at this point. I don't blame you! It seems to be the one successful team we have left in NE Ohio. But if you are a true fan, you are a supporter of the Browns, Cavs, Indians, and Buckeyes. I want to give a quick update for each of these teams.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Browns - It looks certain that we will secure either the 1st of 2nd pick for the 2010 NFL Draft. It is sad to say, but that seems to be the best thing going for us at this point. If ever there was a time to be positive though, it will be these last 4 games for the Browns. Not only do they face the struggling Steelers this week, but they also face the Chiefs and Raiders in 2 of our last 3. My only rant for this week (and it is definately premature) would be to make sure we give Mangini (if he is not fired) less control over the draft this next year. We have so many pressing needs. We need a much better plan for this year's draft!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. Indians - It looks like it will be a quiet offseason for the Indians. The Tribe will use 2010 to develop major league experience for the young players/prospects. If you are huge Indians fan like me, it will take some time to get over the fact that ownership refuses to spend money. My one piece of advice, when you do get over that fact, is to sit back, relax, and enjoy a season of development. Although we won't win many games, it will be a great chance to evaluate the job that Shapiro is doing. Has he been making good trades that not just shed payroll, but give us future major league starters? You have to believe that if the players we received for Sabathia, Martinez, and Lee trades do not pan out, then Shapiro's time in Cleveland should be up. Be on the lookout for names like Michael Brantley, Carlos Santana, Trevor Crowe, Matt LaPorta, and Justin Masterson. If you can, look for cheap tickets and just enjoy the ballpark atmosphere!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3. Buckeyes - There is not much going on in Buckeye football right now. Our Rose Bowl bid was locked up weeks ago and all they have is 20-some odd days left of practice until they play in Pasadena. I will focus on men's basketball. The Buckeyes took a huge hit when Evan Turner broke two vertebraes in his back this weekend. He is scheduled to be out up to 8 weeks. It will be a test for the rest of the Buckeyes as they head into their Big Ten schedule. William Buford will have to step up his game over the next 8 weeks. There are still two positives that come out of this. One, the Buckeyes should still make the Big Dance. Two, maybe this will open the door for Evan Turner to stick around Columbus for his senior season. Can you imagine the Buckeyes with Turner, Diebler, Lighty, Buford, and a recruiting class that is undoubtely in the top 3 in the nation?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;4. Cavs - There is only one question to ask: Is Shaq working out so far? Some say yes, some say no. My answer would be that it hasn't given us a signifcant boost to make us significantly better than last season.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That is your Ohio sports update.&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6559022735490689198-8402566326878237355?l=benjamincarver.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/feeds/8402566326878237355/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=6559022735490689198&amp;postID=8402566326878237355' title='0 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/8402566326878237355'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/8402566326878237355'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/2009/12/ohio-sports-update.html' title='Ohio Sports Update'/><author><name>Ben Carver</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/16282666990767861778</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='22' height='32' src='http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_2O6aKAN8Alo/SOOgvwfdigI/AAAAAAAAAAM/R5PAlFpJ_8Q/S220/bball.jpg'/></author><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6559022735490689198.post-1811206363860949022</id><published>2009-12-02T14:12:00.000-08:00</published><updated>2009-12-02T14:32:47.949-08:00</updated><title type='text'>Assasin of the Headless Sprinting Chicken</title><content type='html'>Over the past month, all of the new staff members from church have been going through a Catalyst book study. So far, we have read about engaging in culture, the importance of community, and living a healthy lifestyle. I have read a lot of things that have caused me to re-evaluate my ministry and personal life.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Today, I read an article by Mike Foster (founder of XXX church). In the article, he talks about seven deadly assassins that can reak havic on your life. There are things like sex, money, egos, and emotional baggage, but the one they focus on is something they call the "Assassin of the Headless Sprinting Chicken". It is the idea of the leader who is constantly juggling too many plates and trying to do too many things at the workplace. The leader who is insistent on always putting in the long hours and pushing harder. We work ourselves to death because we find value and worth in the things we do and accomplish. I know I can relate to this, as I am sure we all can! The problem is that if we continue down this path, we are on the road to being "slain by the Assassin of the Headless Sprinting Chicken". We work ourselves so hard that we become burnt out or worse yet we compromise our relationships with the people who are most important to us.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here are a few tips Mike gives:&lt;br /&gt;1. Manage life in seasons - It is ok to go through seasons where the afterburners are on full force. Work hard, but also rest hard.&lt;br /&gt;2. Stop Trying to Prove Yourself - Do you work yourself to death because failure is just not an option? Are you leading an out-of-control life so that you never have to feel embarrassed, weak, or lower than others in your workplace? Your value is not determined by the amount of hours you work. We aren't asked to be workaholics.&lt;br /&gt;3. Take a technology break - If you don't think you have a problem with being glued to your cell phone, email, facebook, or twitter, try turning it off for 48 hours.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Is it worth compromising your marriage or ripping off your kids just because you have to juggle every plate and become all things to all people? Is it worth compromising your time with God just because there are too many other tasks going on to take time for Him? What are your willing to give up just to prove yourself to someone or are you willing to just stop trying to prove yourself and accept that you have worth value beyond the number of hours you can spend behind a desk? Try slowing down every once in a while. I know we all need it!&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6559022735490689198-1811206363860949022?l=benjamincarver.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/feeds/1811206363860949022/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=6559022735490689198&amp;postID=1811206363860949022' title='0 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/1811206363860949022'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/1811206363860949022'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/2009/12/assasin-of-headless-sprinting-chicken.html' title='Assasin of the Headless Sprinting Chicken'/><author><name>Ben Carver</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/16282666990767861778</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='22' height='32' src='http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_2O6aKAN8Alo/SOOgvwfdigI/AAAAAAAAAAM/R5PAlFpJ_8Q/S220/bball.jpg'/></author><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6559022735490689198.post-8203749182162097843</id><published>2009-10-28T11:19:00.001-07:00</published><updated>2009-10-28T11:28:41.257-07:00</updated><title type='text'>NPCC Sports Ministry Update</title><content type='html'>What has been going on in sports ministry lately? That is a good question. Just like most of the ministries at NPCC, there has been a lot going on.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Last Saturday, we just kicked off our first weekend of games for Armor Basketball. For those of you who don't know what Armor Basketball is, it is our NPCC original youth basketball league for kids in 1st - 6th grade. This season, we have implemented a lot of new pieces to this program. The most exciting piece for the kids is the introductions. Before each game (every Saturday morning), each child gets the chance to experience an NBA-like introduction. We shut off all the lights in the auditorium, turn on some LED lights, crank up the fog machine, blow-up the inflatable tunnel, turn up the music, and announce each player and coach that will be playing that hour. Additionally, each child has a ProPresenter slide that is displayed on the back wall as they run out. For most kids, this is a new and unique experience that they are extremely excited about. Along with introductions, we have also added a concession stand, provided more gear in the player packages, and are currently working on putting together a day of special entertainment to cap off the season. I have a great group of volunteers that are coaching, running all technical equipment, refereeing, and overseeing other important areas.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We are also preparing to launch another co-ed volleyball league and men's basketball league at the beginning of 2010. These are great opportunities to get involved at NPCC and invite a friend. We strive to provide top-quality sports programs for this area.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Be on the look-out for information regarding these two upcoming adult leagues...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Pictures will be posted soon so that you can see what introductions look like for Armor Basketball...&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6559022735490689198-8203749182162097843?l=benjamincarver.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/feeds/8203749182162097843/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=6559022735490689198&amp;postID=8203749182162097843' title='0 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/8203749182162097843'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/8203749182162097843'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/2009/10/npcc-sports-ministry-update.html' title='NPCC Sports Ministry Update'/><author><name>Ben Carver</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/16282666990767861778</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='22' height='32' src='http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_2O6aKAN8Alo/SOOgvwfdigI/AAAAAAAAAAM/R5PAlFpJ_8Q/S220/bball.jpg'/></author><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6559022735490689198.post-5292443683285225170</id><published>2009-08-06T10:26:00.000-07:00</published><updated>2009-08-06T10:40:05.042-07:00</updated><title type='text'>Cleveland Browns Update</title><content type='html'>I recently received a request to update my blog and give my thoughts on the Browns draft and training camp. With training camp just getting under way, it is hard to make any conclusions on progress and decisions that have been made. The biggest piece of news that everyone is waiting on is whether Brady or Derek will be the starting QB to start the season. If Derek Anderson is named the starter, my best guess is that he will get about 4-5 games to prove himself. If the Browns start 1-4 or worse, Brady Quinn will most definately have the starting job from that point forward. If Quinn is named the starter, I believe he will hold the starting position for the entire season (barring any injury). Anderson might get a start in game 6 or 7 if the same circumstance arises (1-4 start). In my opinion, it doesn't really matter to me. I would just like to see us win a few more games this year.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As for the draft, now I will rant!! If any of you have read my Cleveland Browns update since before the draft, you would have seen my suggestions. I think the Browns did a superb job in finiding a suitor to take their #5 pick. They made the right decision to trade back and get some additional picks. The #5 spot was not going to help them fill their needs. From that point forward, I believe the Browns did well below average in the draft. We continued to trade back to pick #21 and stretched on picking a Center, Alex Mack, at that spot. Then, with pick #36 we stretched again and picked Brian Robiskie. I am an Ohio State fan, but no one in their right mind would say that Robiskie was worthy of being picked ahead of Rey Mauluga. Then, with pick #50 we turn around and pick another WR. I believe there were much better options. First, I would have obviously picked Mauluga with pick #36. Then, when Everette Brown was still available at #43, just 7 picks ahead of the Browns, I would have swapped our #50 and a couple of additional picks ot move up and get him (Everette Brown, DE, Florida St.). In the first round, I would have been much happier if we would have addressed a more severe need. Although not phenomonal, I believe that our offensive line was one of our stronger points last season. Defense, Running Back, and wide receiver should have been our main focus. Thus, either Jeremy Maclin or "Beanie Wells" in the first round and Mauluga and Brown in the second round would have made the Cleveland Browns draft winners! Instead, we made 3 consecutive picks in which the guys we picked would not have gone for another 10 picks after us. Not a great draft for the Browns!&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6559022735490689198-5292443683285225170?l=benjamincarver.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/feeds/5292443683285225170/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=6559022735490689198&amp;postID=5292443683285225170' title='0 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/5292443683285225170'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/5292443683285225170'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/2009/08/cleveland-browns-update.html' title='Cleveland Browns Update'/><author><name>Ben Carver</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/16282666990767861778</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='22' height='32' src='http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_2O6aKAN8Alo/SOOgvwfdigI/AAAAAAAAAAM/R5PAlFpJ_8Q/S220/bball.jpg'/></author><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6559022735490689198.post-5409951413292294662</id><published>2009-06-25T07:48:00.001-07:00</published><updated>2009-06-25T08:05:30.856-07:00</updated><title type='text'>Excellence</title><content type='html'>Wow! It has been a very long time since my last blog. I apologize to all my very loyal readers out there (none haha). I guess that is why it has been such a long time, I don't really have any readers to ask, "Why are you not blogging?" Hopefully, I can do a better job at staying on top of this.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Yesterday, I had the chance to go out to lunch with Kevin West. We got on the topic of striving towards excellence in our ministries. As I thought through our discussion, I began thinking about how closely striving for excellence in our ministries can relate to real life.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Often times, we come to the realization that we can't be perfect, so, we simply take a lax approach and form the mindset of "I will just give it my best shot." Is this good enough? In our lives, we might only get one chance in front of people to make an impact and portray ourselves in Christ's light. That one shot will either never get you respect again from someone or it will bring them back again. Do we want to just "give it our best shot" or do we want to truly strive for excellence every time? Yes, there are going to be failures. But if we are constantly trying to stay "on top of our game", more often than not, we are going to get people coming back to check out why our attitude, outlook on life, or personality is different than most people. They will come back wondering why we offered grace to that waitor or cashier. They will come back wondering why we chose to not yell at the referee when it was obviously a terrible call, or wondering why we failed at a task and embarrassed our ourselves but had thick enough skin to laugh at our failure. They will come back wondering why our attitude is so uplifting even when we've lost our jobs or our checking accounts have just run dry. If in every facet of our lives we are striving for excellence, we have an awesome opportunity to get a 2nd opportunity to impact someone and then a 3rd opportunity. Once we have showed them so many times that there is something different about us, they can begin accepting our failures every now and then. If we don't strive for excellence and we fail on that first impression, there will never be a second opportunity.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;No matter what we do in our lives, Christ calls us to strive for excellence.&lt;br /&gt;1 Timothy 4:12,15-16&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6559022735490689198-5409951413292294662?l=benjamincarver.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/feeds/5409951413292294662/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=6559022735490689198&amp;postID=5409951413292294662' title='1 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/5409951413292294662'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/5409951413292294662'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/2009/06/excellence.html' title='Excellence'/><author><name>Ben Carver</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/16282666990767861778</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='22' height='32' src='http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_2O6aKAN8Alo/SOOgvwfdigI/AAAAAAAAAAM/R5PAlFpJ_8Q/S220/bball.jpg'/></author><thr:total>1</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6559022735490689198.post-4266598747080217409</id><published>2009-03-18T09:28:00.000-07:00</published><updated>2009-03-18T09:46:07.466-07:00</updated><title type='text'>Cleveland Browns Update</title><content type='html'>I am a Cleveland sports fan. Although it would sometimes seem hard to admit, I have always been a fan of the local teams, through thick and thin. I love the Browns, Cavs, Indians, and Buckeyes. Out of all of these teams, it seems hardest to get excited each season for the Browns. They are always capable of letting you down. Through it all, I continue to hope that they can turn things around every year.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So far, this offseason seems to be a disappointment for the Browns. The only major move they have made in free agency is trading away Kellen Winslow for a second round draft pick. Let's take a second to explore the positives and negatives of this deal. First, Winslow has been a constant problem with his injury issues and his attitude. Second, we did pick up a mid-2nd round selection. Third, if Martin Rucker, the tight-end drafted last year out of Missouri, is as good as the Browns organization has been raving about, he should be able to step into Winslow's shoes in the next couple seasons. The major negative is that we lost the only guy who has proven he could hang onto the ball. Unless Braylon starts holding onto all those passes that hit him in the hands, I'm not sure who our young quarterbacks are going to be able to throw the ball to.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Additionally, the Browns have major holes to fill on both sides of the ball. In my mind, the biggest problem is on the offensive side. We have a pretty good line, but Jamal Lewis is possibly the slowest RB in the NFL. He is now over-the-hill for an NFL player and the Browns seriously need to address this issue immediately. Second, with Donte' Stallworth constantly hurt and now facing legal issues, we don't have a 2nd wide reciever (Joe Jurevicious released). Thus, on offense, it would be nice to get a running back, wide receiver, and offensive lineman. On defense, we have had trouble defending the pass. We can blame our corners, but the fact of the matter is we have no pressure on the quarterback. We need to find a quality OLB or DE to get to the quarterback. Thus, on defense we could use an upgrade at OLB or DE and CB.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Right now, we have 3 picks in the Top 50 in this years draft. My advice to the Browns would be to trade out of the 5 spot. Try to find someone who wants Michael Crabtree before the Raiders get to him and trade out of that spot for their 1st-rounder and an additional 2nd rounder. Having four picks in the first 2 rounds would help the Browns more than keeping the #5 and stretching on a DE/OLB at that position. Just my thoughts for now.&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6559022735490689198-4266598747080217409?l=benjamincarver.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/feeds/4266598747080217409/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=6559022735490689198&amp;postID=4266598747080217409' title='1 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/4266598747080217409'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/4266598747080217409'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/2009/03/cleveland-browns-update.html' title='Cleveland Browns Update'/><author><name>Ben Carver</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/16282666990767861778</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='22' height='32' src='http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_2O6aKAN8Alo/SOOgvwfdigI/AAAAAAAAAAM/R5PAlFpJ_8Q/S220/bball.jpg'/></author><thr:total>1</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6559022735490689198.post-2194516860620590723</id><published>2009-02-24T07:57:00.000-08:00</published><updated>2009-02-24T08:07:41.916-08:00</updated><title type='text'>Losing Sight</title><content type='html'>If you were at &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0"&gt;NewPointe&lt;/span&gt; on Sunday, you know Dwight just started talking about "Making Room". One of the points he made struck me and as I continue to think about it, it is disappointing. In one of the bulleted points, Dwight talked about our tendency to ignore the outside because the inside is full.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Volunteer recruiting has and will always be one of my biggest struggles. It is something I am constantly trying to work on and get better at. As I thought about this point from Sunday, I realized that in the few months that I have been here at NewPointe, I have tended to ignore the outside and focus on the inside at times. Instead of constantly searching for new people that can get involved with a certain aspect of sports ministry, I tend to look at it and determine we are full. Instead, I need to be constantly investing in new people and trying to plug people in to sports here at NewPointe. We have a great opportunity to reach people with something that is important, sports, and I want to surround myself with as many people as possible.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Just something that struck me from the message on Sunday.&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6559022735490689198-2194516860620590723?l=benjamincarver.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/feeds/2194516860620590723/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=6559022735490689198&amp;postID=2194516860620590723' title='0 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/2194516860620590723'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/2194516860620590723'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/2009/02/losing-sight.html' title='Losing Sight'/><author><name>Ben Carver</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/16282666990767861778</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='22' height='32' src='http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_2O6aKAN8Alo/SOOgvwfdigI/AAAAAAAAAAM/R5PAlFpJ_8Q/S220/bball.jpg'/></author><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6559022735490689198.post-1398224645614382666</id><published>2009-02-19T06:46:00.001-08:00</published><updated>2009-02-19T06:58:17.244-08:00</updated><title type='text'>Cavaliers Update</title><content type='html'>It has been a while since I've posted on my blog. Since I began blogging, all of them have been pretty serious, either relating to family or a book study. In an attempt to blog more often, I figured I would give updates of my favorite sports teams every once in a while.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As some of you may know, the trade deadline for the NBA is today. Just like last year, the Cavs are looking to be active in the trade market to improve their depth and give them a better chance of making a run at the NBA Finals. It is no secret that the Celtics are going to be tough to get past in the playoffs. Thus, the Cavs are looking to make upgrades.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So far, the Cavs have been linked to Marcus Camby (Clippers), Antawn Jamison (Wizards), Richard Jefferson (Bucks), and even Amar'e Stoudemire (Suns). Although some of you fans may not like it, it looks as if Wally Szczerbiak is always the name linked to the trades. His huge contract works well for big contract trades (NBA rules) and his contract will also be coming off the books after this season. Most NBA teams who are looking to deal stars are hoping to free up salary cap space and cut payroll for this season and season's to come. Thus, if the Cavs do make a deal, it is likely Wally will no longer be a part of the Cavaliers.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In my opinion, the Cavaliers best two options are Antawn Jamison or pull off a huge deal for Amar'e (which seems unlikely). The upside of both of these trades is that Jamison will be a huge upgrade offensively off the bench. Jamison is an all-star who can fill it up when needed. Obviously, everyone knows that Amar'e is a superstar. Not only would this make our offense even more prolific with Mo, LBJ, and Amar'e, but a trade like this could help keep LeBron in Cleveland after the 2010 offseason. Those are just my thoughts for now!&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6559022735490689198-1398224645614382666?l=benjamincarver.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/feeds/1398224645614382666/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=6559022735490689198&amp;postID=1398224645614382666' title='0 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/1398224645614382666'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/1398224645614382666'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/2009/02/cavaliers-update.html' title='Cavaliers Update'/><author><name>Ben Carver</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/16282666990767861778</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='22' height='32' src='http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_2O6aKAN8Alo/SOOgvwfdigI/AAAAAAAAAAM/R5PAlFpJ_8Q/S220/bball.jpg'/></author><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6559022735490689198.post-8851028563861103415</id><published>2008-12-22T13:22:00.000-08:00</published><updated>2008-12-22T13:43:07.941-08:00</updated><title type='text'>Family</title><content type='html'>The skit in Sunday's service got me thinking about my family. Isn't family great? I have been blessed with an awesome family. Not just great parents and siblings, but awesome aunts, uncles, and cousins. Every holiday, my entire family gets together. We all gather in one household to celebrate together. There are about 30 people - ranging in age from 20 months to 82 years old- coming together. A family get together like that can usually spell chaos and disaster. Maybe to outsiders, it looks like a bunch of chaos, but there is nothing in this world I love more than gathering with my family. My parents and my aunt &amp;amp; uncle have done a phenomonel job of creating a family centered on God, laughter, and definately the importance of good food.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;During this Christmas season, I wanted to take a chance and blog about the blessing family has been in my life. Without such a tight-knit family, adversity would be much tougher to get through, but it has never failed that when adversity comes, that everyone in my family is ready to support each other. Over the past 4 years, we have faced a lot of adversity with dad. Going through the process of Alzheimer's has not been easy on anyone. Without family, things would have been nearly impossible. With family, we have gotten through. With the passing of dad in August, family has gathered around mom to support her. God has blessed me with a family that is amazing! We certainly aren't perfect, but in each of my family members I can see a servant's heart. What a blessing!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If nothing else, it is on account of mom, dad, Aunt Charlene, and Uncle Larry that God's heart shows through. Mom has always been the tough one in our family. She has always held it all together and always stressed the importance of getting through things together. Thank you mom! Without your strength and values, our family would not have grown into what it is today. I am truly thankful to God for blessing me with such an awesome family and nothing like the Christmas season can remind me of this more.&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6559022735490689198-8851028563861103415?l=benjamincarver.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/feeds/8851028563861103415/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=6559022735490689198&amp;postID=8851028563861103415' title='0 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/8851028563861103415'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/8851028563861103415'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/2008/12/family.html' title='Family'/><author><name>Ben Carver</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/16282666990767861778</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='22' height='32' src='http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_2O6aKAN8Alo/SOOgvwfdigI/AAAAAAAAAAM/R5PAlFpJ_8Q/S220/bball.jpg'/></author><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6559022735490689198.post-3219411791422809741</id><published>2008-12-15T13:21:00.000-08:00</published><updated>2008-12-15T13:44:17.624-08:00</updated><title type='text'>Failure</title><content type='html'>Failure can be a scary thing. Too often in life, we live in the shadow of failure, whether that is the fear of failure or the allowance of letting failure define us as a person. Isn't this all too true in the sporting world? We've based all of our practice and time around succeeding. We've become &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0"&gt;accustomed&lt;/span&gt; to success. When one obstacle is thrown in our way, we tend to question our value on the field, court, or whatever sports venue it is. A key fumble, a couple of missed free throws, or a strikeout with the bases loaded to end the game &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1"&gt;devastate&lt;/span&gt; us. A person story of my own life:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My final minutes on the basketball court in my competitive career were filled with disappointment. As a DII college basketball player, I had experienced a lot of success on the basketball court. One of my final goals was to go to the National Tournament. In the conference championship, we were winning by a single point with less than 10 seconds left in the game. I had just secured a rebound a was fouled. During my senior season, I was an 85% free throw shooter. If I made both of these free throws, the worst that could happen is the other team could make a desperation 3-pointer to send the game into overtime. I stepped to the line and missed both free throws. The other team raced to the other end and hit a shot with 0.6 second remaining. We lost the game by 1 point. The defeat was crushing to me. It made me question my basketball career. This failure was poised to mare my memories. I could have let this event define me as a basketball player. In looking back, it took some time to realize that no single event could define me.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Whether it is sports, a job, your family, or anything else that holds significance in your life, there will be many obstacles that are thrown in your way. There will be failures along the way that cause you to question yourself. There will be failures that seem like they define you as a person. "Failure is an event- it's not personal." It is the same with God. There are days when I have failed miserable in my walk with Christ. There are times when I seem at the bottom of the rollercoaster and wonder how I can love God the way I am supposed to. We must develop persistence. There is no single event that will change the way God feels about us. You only fail when you quit! We only fail when we quit trying to grow closer. There will be obstacles and failures in our lives, but Coach Tressel states, "Every obstacle presents an opportunity."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Your life and your walk with Christ is not defined by one event. If you ever get the feeling that you're defined by one failure, don't believe it for a second!&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6559022735490689198-3219411791422809741?l=benjamincarver.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/feeds/3219411791422809741/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=6559022735490689198&amp;postID=3219411791422809741' title='2 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/3219411791422809741'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/3219411791422809741'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/2008/12/failure.html' title='Failure'/><author><name>Ben Carver</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/16282666990767861778</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='22' height='32' src='http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_2O6aKAN8Alo/SOOgvwfdigI/AAAAAAAAAAM/R5PAlFpJ_8Q/S220/bball.jpg'/></author><thr:total>2</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6559022735490689198.post-2661733919796790313</id><published>2008-11-17T07:17:00.000-08:00</published><updated>2008-11-17T07:56:27.184-08:00</updated><title type='text'>Attitude</title><content type='html'>&lt;em&gt;"An athlete with a good attitude is &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0"&gt;coachable&lt;/span&gt;. He welcomes criticism, constantly seeks to learn, and avoids criticizing his coach or teammates." &lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;-#7 on list for Having a Proper Attitude&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Coach &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1"&gt;Tressel&lt;/span&gt; devotes an entire section, and even bases a large part of the Ohio State University football program, to having a proper attitude. There is no substitute in life for gratitude, humility, and enthusiasm. At the heart of these characteristics is the desire to put the team and the goal first.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;How often in life are we "&lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2"&gt;coachable&lt;/span&gt;"? Do we welcome criticism, seek to learn, and avoid the pitfall of blaming and criticising others? I am guilty of failing at all three of these often. When I feel stressed or something in life just hasn't gone my way, I am the last person who wants to hear criticism. It is in my human nature to put the blame on other circumstances or even on someone else. I don't feel like being willing to learn from my mistakes. Sometimes, I even buy into the lie that I already have the right answers and I can fix the problem myself. When I &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3"&gt;succumb&lt;/span&gt; to any of these, I am putting myself ahead of the "goal" and ahead of the people around me. Attitude is a virus. Whether it is my team, my family, my department, or anything else I lead, my attitude is infectious. A team that constantly throws blame at each other and is unwilling to learn from each other is doomed for failure. When we model an attitude of humility, one that allows us to say that we are at fault and we are in need of teaching from someone who is more knowledgable, that attitude begins to spread and we are headed towards growth (both individually and as a community/team/family/department). In Proverbs it is written, "Humility precedes honor." God calls us to practice an attitude of humility.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Do I have the humility to be coachable?&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6559022735490689198-2661733919796790313?l=benjamincarver.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/feeds/2661733919796790313/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=6559022735490689198&amp;postID=2661733919796790313' title='0 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/2661733919796790313'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/2661733919796790313'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/2008/11/attitude.html' title='Attitude'/><author><name>Ben Carver</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/16282666990767861778</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='22' height='32' src='http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_2O6aKAN8Alo/SOOgvwfdigI/AAAAAAAAAAM/R5PAlFpJ_8Q/S220/bball.jpg'/></author><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6559022735490689198.post-2758420096481862233</id><published>2008-10-14T12:49:00.000-07:00</published><updated>2008-10-14T17:29:50.318-07:00</updated><title type='text'>The Winner's Manual</title><content type='html'>&lt;a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_2O6aKAN8Alo/SPT4UnvT-PI/AAAAAAAAAAo/bS4UklGAUWI/s1600-h/The+Winner%27s+Manual.jpg"&gt;&lt;img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5257099698196707570" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_2O6aKAN8Alo/SPT4UnvT-PI/AAAAAAAAAAo/bS4UklGAUWI/s320/The+Winner%27s+Manual.jpg" border="0" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;Today, I began reading Jim Tressel's new book. For the next four weeks, I will randomly be putting up posts that are reflections and thoughts from this book. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;If you're an Ohio State football fan, a sports fan, or just looking for some tidbits in regards to attitude, discipline, excellence, faith, handling adversity, love, reponsiblity, and team, this book should provide it.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;"If the game of life ended tonight, would you be a winner?"&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6559022735490689198-2758420096481862233?l=benjamincarver.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/feeds/2758420096481862233/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=6559022735490689198&amp;postID=2758420096481862233' title='0 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/2758420096481862233'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/2758420096481862233'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/2008/10/winners-manual.html' title='The Winner&apos;s Manual'/><author><name>Ben Carver</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/16282666990767861778</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='22' height='32' src='http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_2O6aKAN8Alo/SOOgvwfdigI/AAAAAAAAAAM/R5PAlFpJ_8Q/S220/bball.jpg'/></author><media:thumbnail xmlns:media='http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/' url='http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_2O6aKAN8Alo/SPT4UnvT-PI/AAAAAAAAAAo/bS4UklGAUWI/s72-c/The+Winner%27s+Manual.jpg' height='72' width='72'/><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6559022735490689198.post-3066977184478469758</id><published>2008-10-02T09:45:00.000-07:00</published><updated>2008-10-02T09:51:50.914-07:00</updated><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='Sports Update'/><title type='text'>New Beginning</title><content type='html'>Monday marked the first day for a sports league here at NewPointe. It was an exciting day for many reasons. First, I asked God to supply the people if we were going to make this happen. I asked God for 35 people for the first volleyball league. A week before the league started, we were at 24 people. It looked bleak! By the time 6:00 Monday night rolled around, we were at 48 people and I actually had to put 15 people on a waiting list. Although it may seem small, it just proves that God has a hand in everything and he can turn the dismal situations around.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;On top of this, we are getting to introduce new people to NewPointe and hopefully to God.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Be on the lookout for more updates. We are starting our Armor Basketball League for boys and girls in grades 1st through 6th on October 11. If you are looking for a place to serve or haven't signed your kids up yet, this is a great opportunity!&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6559022735490689198-3066977184478469758?l=benjamincarver.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/feeds/3066977184478469758/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=6559022735490689198&amp;postID=3066977184478469758' title='0 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/3066977184478469758'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6559022735490689198/posts/default/3066977184478469758'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://benjamincarver.blogspot.com/2008/10/new-beginning.html' title='New Beginning'/><author><name>Ben Carver</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/16282666990767861778</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='22' height='32' src='http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_2O6aKAN8Alo/SOOgvwfdigI/AAAAAAAAAAM/R5PAlFpJ_8Q/S220/bball.jpg'/></author><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6559022735490689198.post-8008425107474856378</id><published>2008-10-01T08:16:00.001-07:00</published><updated>2008-10-01T08:18:52.731-07:00</updated><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='random'/><title type='text'>Hello Blog World</title><content type='html'>Ben Carver here with &lt;a href="http://www.davedangelo.net"&gt;Dave DAngelo&lt;/a&gt; - just set up my new blog.
